Historically, The World May Have Seen The Most Dramatic Red Tulip In “Apeldoorn” But A Random Mutation In The 1960’s Resulted In A Plant With Red Petals Edged In Yellow. Selected By J.S. Verdegaal And Released In 1968. It Was Named “Apeldoorn Elite” Bold Bicoloured Flowers With The Hallmark Of This Member Of The Darwin Hybrid Tulip Class. Perched Atop Extremely Tall Stems Above Broadly Lance-Shaped Leaves, The Elegant Blooms Have Six Pointed “Petals”
“Apeldoorn Elite” Has Received The Royal Horticultural Society’s Award Of Garden Merit (Agm) Which Is For Plants Of Outstanding Excellence.
Darwin Tulips Are Known To Be The Most Weather Resistant Of All The Garden Tulips. They Are Also Among The Largest Blooming And Most Highly Valued Tulips Available Today. “Apeldoorn Elite” Were First Introduced In 1943 By The Dutch Hybidizer D.W.Lefeber And Tend To Be More Long Lived Than Many Other Tulip Hybrids.
Tulips Are Generally Easy To Grow. They Prefer Full To Part Sun And Require Average To Fertile Soil With Good Drainage. It Is Good To Let Their Green Tops Photosynthesize To Allow Them To Store Plenty Of Fuel For Next Spring’s Display. Once Their Leaves Start To Turn Yellow, They Can Be Cut To The Ground.
