GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Chlidanthus Is A Small Genus In The Amaryllidaceae (Amaryllis) Family Mainly From South America. “Chlidanthus Fragrans” Is A Species Native To The Peruvian Andes. It Is One Of The Most Fragrant Bulbous Flowers, With A Scent Of Citrus. It Blooms In The Summer. It Is A Tender, Bulbous Perennial With Erect, Narrow, Linear, Grey-Green Basal Eaves. It Has A Reputation As A Shy Bloomer To Many Who Have Grown It. However It Is A Challenge Not An Impossibility And They Are Superb, Large, Fragrant Lemon-Peel Yellow Trumpet Held On Long Tubes. The Flowers Are 3 Inches Long With Flaring Petal-Like Lobes. They Grow On Stems 6-10 In Length Before The 12 Inch Long, Stap-Like Leaves Appear.
Choose Good Rich Soil, Free-Draining, But Moisture Retentive. Good Feeding Will Build Size And Good Vigorous Growth And Bulb Size, Means Good Future Flowers. If You Grow Them Well You Can Expect Several To Each Bulb. As The Leaves Yellow In Autumn Feed Well With A High Potash Fertiliser And This Will Help Initiate Flower Buds
Plant 1 Inch Down Just Covered And 4-6 Inches Apart, Or 1 Bulb Per 6 Inch Pot.
When Frost Threatens In The Late Autumn, Either Mulch Well, Or Dig Up The Bulbs If They Are In The Ground Carefully Leaving Soil Around The Roots And Put Them In A Well-Ventilated Shady Place On Their Sides Until The Leaves Wither. Cut Off The Leaves And Store The Bulbs Upside Down Over Winter In Dry Peat. It Needs To Be Dry When Dormant. When There Is No More Frost In The Spring They Can Be Replanted.
