These Bulbs Are Exceptionally Large For A Small Fritillaria, So Will Throw Beautiful Strong Outstanding Blooms.

This Is The Snakeshead Fritillary (Fritillary Just Meaning Chequered, Describing The Mosaic Patterning On The Flower) Growing From The Slovak Republic To Poland Through To Central France And Southern England. Once Widespresd In England And A Regular Feature In Elizabethan Gardens, Many Of The Damp Meadows In Which It Once Grew Have Been Ploughed Or Drained And The Flowers Have Been Lost. Some Couple Of Dozen Sites Remain. It Is In Similar Conditions That It Likes To Grow In Our Gardens. It Grows Easily In Grass Or Drained But Damp Soil, In The Sun Or Half Shade, But Does Not Like Being Dried Out Completely.

“Fritillaria Meleagris” Has Received The Royal Horticultural Society’s Award Of Garden Merit (Agm) Which Is For Plants Of Outstanding Excellence

Snake’s Head Fritillaries Always Excite Attention Wherever They Are Seen. None Of The Other Lovely Members Of The Fritillaria Genus Can Match This Native Wildflower For The Bizarre And Unmistakable Colouring Of Its Bell-Shaped Flowers. The Leaves Are Narrow And Can Be Lost In The Grass, But The Flowers Are Beautiful, Square-Shouldered Bells In Pink, Mauve And Darker Purples, Lightly Chequered. Inside They Are Paler, But More Splashed With Shining Green.

Plant In Small Unregimented Drifts, About 4” Deep At Variable Spacing In The Open Or Slight Shade, Perhaps In Rough Grass Or Fertile Soil. They Are Also Perfect For Naturalising In A Moist Woodland Or Wildflower Garden. Plants Are Extremely Hardy And Trouble Free.
