GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Asian Crinum Lily is a large, free-blooming, very fragrant, bulbous perennial. Native to South East Asia. It grows and increases vigorously and blooms continuously. In marginal regions, frost may kill the leaves but the plant recovers and new leaves grow with the return of mild temperatures.

Over time the bulb grows larger and the broad strap-shaped leaves emerge in a trunk-like mass that separates into individual flaring, arching glossy leaves. The bulb produces daughter bulbs freely and one plant eventually becomes an imposing mass. The thick succulent flower stems are topped by fountain-like clusters of large fragrant flowers with narrow widely-separated pink petals that accounts for one of its common names “Spider Lily”. Each stem has up to 10 blooms each up to 12 cm in width and rising between 90-120 cm high.

“Crinum Powellii Lily Rosea” has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (agm) which is for plants of outstanding excellence.

Plant the large elongated bulbs at least 30cm (12”) down with the top 2” of the bulb showing through the surface of the soil. They like full to partial sun and deep well-drained but moist soil that is rich in humus. Once established, the plant tolerates dry conditions. “Crinum Powellii Lily” can be grown in large deep patio containers. Water well whilst in growth but keep dry in the winter. It is used as a specimen plant for its size and sculptural shape. Planted near the house, it perfumes the local air.
