GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Best Known For Its Showy-Flowered Hybrids “Hippeastrum” Comprises About 80 Species Of Bulbous Perennials. All Are Grown For Their Fantastic Flowers That Are Typically Large Amaryllis-Like And Colourful. Most Species Are Native To The Subtropical And Tropical Regions Of Central And South America And The West Indies.

The Dark To Medium Green Strap-Like Leaves Grow From A Large Bulb. The Funnel-Shaped, Horizontal To Somewhat Nodding Blooms Are Borne Atop Stout, Leafless, Knee-High Stems In Four-Six-Flowered Clusters. Bulbs Typically Produce Two Flower Stems At A Time. These Bulbs Are Conditioned To Flower In Winter. The Flowers Are Followed By Large Lobed Seed Capsules.

“Double Dragon” Bears Large, Double Flowers Of Uniform Crimson-Red With Purplish-Red Veins.

For Indoor Forcing The Bigger The Bulb The Better The Show And These Are Very Large Bulbs. You Can Choose When You Want Them To Flower. Keep Them In A Cool Dry Place. Plant 6-8 Weeks Before You Want Them To Flower. Before Planting, Pick Off Any Dead Or Damaged Pieces Of Root, Leaving Only Healthy, Fleshy Roots. Make Up A Compost Mix Using Equal Parts Of Peat And Perlite. Half-Fill A Plastic Pot 2.5 CM (1”) Wider Than The Bulb, With The Compost Mix And Add Compost Around The Roots So That One-Third Of The Bulb Shows. Water Well And Let The Soil Drain. Never Leave Pots Standing In Water. Begin Feeding As Soon As The Shoot Appears And Continue On A Weekly Basis Until Flowering Is Over. Water Plants As Required.
