GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Many Lilies Are Too Brash For The Flower Border And Are Far More Successful In Large Containers, But The Demure “Martagon Lily” Is An Exception. Its Muted Colours And Swept Back Petals Blend Seamlessly. It Is Elegant, Balanced And Poised When Flowering In June And July And In Autumn The Upright Seed Heads Provide A Valuable Silhouette. It Was Bred In The 1970’s And Is An Old Favourite. “Martagon” Is Very Scarce.
“Lilium Martagon” Has Received The Royal Horticultural Society’s Award Of Garden Merit (Agm) Which Is For Plants Of Outstanding Excellence.
Mid-To-Late Summer Blooming, “Martagon Claude Shride” Offers Colour-Drenched 4-5cm Flowers Which Carry Subtle Mahogany Red Flowers With Golden Highlights And Complement Every Garden Setting. The Blooms Arise 30-50 To A Stem On Plants Up To 120 Cm Tall. Decorated With Whorled Foliage And A Light “Wild-Flower” Scent Stunning!!
Newly Planted Bulbs May Take A Year To Establish Themselves Before They Make Any Growth. They Sometimes Do Not Emerge The First Season And Those That Do Don’t Always Flower, But Once Established They Form Lasting Colonies And Are One Of The Easiest Species To Cultivate. Trouble Free And Very Long-Lived. Widely Adapted And Content In Many Adverse Conditions. Many Lilies Fade Away Within 4 Years, But This One Will Outlive The Gardener Who Plants It.
“Lilium Martagon” Is Found In A Huge Area Across Southern Europe From The Iberian Peninsular To The Balkans And From Poland Across The Caucasus To Siberia. This Was One Of The First Liles To Be Grown In The British Gardens: Gerard Described It In 1596. The Common Name Comes From The Stye Of Turban Adopted By The Turkish Ruler Sultan Mohammed 1 Which Was Known As A Martagon And Had A Similarly Pendulous Shape, Hence Too The Alternative Name “Turk’s Cap Lily”
Cultivated For Over 5 Thousand Years Lillies Are Undoubtedly One Of The Most Beloved And Treasured Of All Perennial Garden Flowers. They Are Undeniably Beautiful. From When They First Break The Topsoil Lilies Command Attention, The Stems With Their Spirals Of Fresh Clean-Cut Narrow Leaves, Lengthen At An Almost Visible Rate And Are Soon Topped By Prolific Buds That Hint Of The Exotic Blooms To Come. The Splendour Of The Species Is Lush And Prolific. The Flowers Opening Into Wide, Waxen-Petalled Stars, Several Crowning Each Slender Fine-Leaved Stem.
Plant 12 Cm (5”) Deep.
Lilies Prefer Full To Partial Sun And Neutral, Well-Drained Humus-Rich Soil. If The Soil Is Heavy Add Grit To The Planting Hole. They Are Perfect For Cutting Gardens, Summer Containers And Mixed Borders. “Martagon Lily” Are Much More Tolerant Of Shade Than Most Hybrids. It Is A Fine Choice For The Shrub Border And Woodland (Or Overgrown) Areas As Well As Mixed Borders.
They Will Multiply Each Year And Every Few Years Will Require Thinning, So That They Don’t Become Too Crowded. Late Summer Or Early Autumn Is The Best Time To Do This. Allow The Plants To Die Off Naturally Rather Than Cutting Them Down After Blooming. This Will Ensure The Bulbs Have Seen A Full Return Of Nutients From The Plant Before Winter.
