“allium forelock” is a very distinctive and spectacular allium, is native to turkey and central asia and is commonly called an ornamental onion. “allium forelock” is unusual both in colour and form, it is grown for its bloom of egg-shaped, maroon/purple flower heads each with a distinctive and unusual forelock (topknot or tuft) of elongated white-tipped mahogany/red flowers exploding out of the top of its head. Strap-shaped basal green leave form a clump of foliage in spring, in may time flowering stems rise up topped with the unique flowers. Flowers are fragrant. Flower diameter is 15-20cms. Leaves and bulbs have an oniony aroma when cut or bruised.
If your garden needs a summer focal point or you get a kick out of stopping traffic, plant a couple of dozen. As if that wasn’t reason enough to grow them, these flowers dry beautifully and hold their form for years. Dried flower heads are strong architectural elements, in the garden or in a tall, simple vase.
This perennial thrives in fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Plant and keep it well watered through the growing season. Lift and divide the bulbs only if they become crowded. Grow “forelock” as an exclamation point in the garden. Be sure to plant extra since the onion works well as either a fresh or dried cut flower.
Bees and butterflies love them, but deer and rodents hate them.
Large bulbs plant 20cm deep 20cm apart 25 per sq metre. Small bulbs plant 10cm deep 10cm apart 100 per sq metre
